Professional Staffing Jobs Report: June 2014

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s monthly report, the U.S. job market added 217,000 jobs in May 2014. This report was unexpectedly weak compared to April’s outstanding numbers in job creation. However, some are pointing out that the only reason behind April’s superb numbers were to make up for lost time in the first quarter of the year.

The unemployment rate was stagnant at 6.3 percent in May with the number of unemployed persons staying the same at 9.8 million.

Professional & Business Services on Par with Average Monthly Gain

Professional & Business Services, though slightly flatter this month, is still on par with its average month-over-month gain of 55,000 job additions. Some sub-sectors of note include Management & Technical Consulting and Computer Systems Design & Related Services. Both sectors saw an increase in 7,000 positions in May.

Temporary Help Services Still Climbing

Once again, Temporary Help Services was on top as the sub-sector added 14,000 jobs in May. Temporary Help Services has added 224,000 jobs over the past year, marking significant growth in temp employment unlike anything economists have seen in years.

Health Care & Social Assistance Sector Seeing Double & Triple in May

The Health Care & Social Assistance sector added 55,000 in may – 34,000 of those coming solely from the Health Care industry. The numbers were slightly surprising, as Health Care saw double their average monthly gain for the past 12 months. Many of these positions were in physician offices, outpatient centers and home health services.

Social Assistance saw triple its average gain – 21,000 jobs this month instead of the average of 7,000.

BLS Reports Small Revisions

This month’s report included only one small revision over the change of total nonfarm employment in April. The employment gains were actually 6,000 lower than previously reported; therefore, the correct number of jobs added in April 2014 was 282,000.
