Professional Staffing Jobs Report: June 2015
May adds 280,000 new jobs, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment rate at 5.5 percent.
May adds 280,000 new jobs, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment rate at 5.5 percent.
While total nonfarm payroll employment increased, the unemployment rate edged up a notch to 5.5 percent. May was in line with the average monthly gain of 251,000 over the prior 12 months, good news for job seekers and the economy.
The civilian labor force also rose by 397,000, while the labor force participation rate stayed flat at 62.9 percent. Since April 2014, the participation rate has remained within a narrow range of 62.7 percent to 62.9 percent. The employment-population ratio, at 59.4 percent, was essentially unchanged in May.
Professional and business services adds 63,000 jobs
Employment in the professional and business services sector rose by 63,000 in May. This sector has been a robust contributor to job gains adding a total of 671,000 jobs over the past year. Other industries that experienced job growth last month include health care, construction, and leisure and hospitality. Mining employment continued to decline.
Health Care continues to grow
Employment in the health care sector continues to grow just as it did during the recession period, seemingly unaffected by adverse economic conditions. Health care added 47,000 jobs in May, and over the past year, health care has added a total of 408,000 jobs to the economy. Within the industry, employment in ambulatory care services (which includes home health care services and outpatient care centers) rose by 28,000. Hospitals added 16,000 jobs over the month.
Construction and Manufacturing still recovering
Employment in the professional and business services sector rose by 63,000 in May. This sector has been a robust contributor to job gains adding a total of 671,000 jobs over the past year. Other industries that experienced job growth last month include health care, construction, and leisure and hospitality. Mining employment continued to decline.
Temporary help flourishes
Companies are hiring (there were 5 million job openings on the last business day of March) and employers are still utilizing staffing companies. Employment with temporary help services continued to rise and brought an additional 20,000 jobs to the economy last month. These are encouraging and indicate that the economy is improving, and perhaps turning in favor of job seekers. As more jobs are added, opportunities will present themselves for those who know how to take advantage of them.
